New Question - House breaking...

embibble Aug 20, 2005 07:11 AM

Divinedragon's post below just made me remember to ask.

My dog (the sameone I posted about before) is going to be 2 years soon, and he is still having bathroom troubles.

What I dont get is, he will go to the bathroom outside come inside and go again!?!??!

As anyone else had similar experiences?

Another problem is our dog has trouble telling us he needs to go. He has developed a habit of gentely licking us when he needs to go out. He licks you when he doesnt need to go too though, instead he wants you to play or somthing. Any adivce? We have tried using bells and attaching them to the door and stuff but it doesnt help really.

Thanks alot!

I recommend taking a dog out on schedule, not waiting for him to ask. Take him out once per hour whenever you're at home and awake. And no punishment. Among many other complications, punishment in housetraining causes a dog to hide from you to do it and makes it much harder to help the dog establish the right habits.

The details of how to housetrain a dog are in the articles under "Housetraining" at the link under my signature. Seriously, it will help!

We do try to take him out on regularly, however that isnt the issue. Because sometimes he will go regardless if he has gone already. I dont know were he gets the materials to go, he doesnt eat that much food?!?!

*NOTE* - We walk daily to my grandparents, like I mentioned before. He has only gone two times during our walks. I've been walking him for the past two months or so. Often times he will wait to go IN my grandparents house. He will go right infront of us! He will do this regardless if he has gone outside just before. Anyways I try to take him out to go to the bathroom while we are there (because I think its the EXCITEMENT that causes this and his other problems). The last few days he hasnt been going to the bathroom over there at all. So happy we are... were.

TODAY we walked over as usual. Nothing new. However today, unlike the last few days, right infront of us he starts to go pee. I Said "Chuie!" I walked over, he is still peeing, and pull him over (I was going to take him out) but he didnt stop going. So I figured its not that big of a deal, we just have to work on this some more.

I begin to clean it up when he goes on the other side of the room!!! Poo this time. I noticed has he was walking away (this all takes place in like less than 3 minutes.) So we pick that up. I go to turn the computer on, and about 30 seconds later... I go back and he has gone poo AGAIN!?!?!?! How is this possible? The first time he went poo it wasnt a HUGE amount, but a fair amount, the second time was much larger. I didnt not yell at him to make him stop either (he finnished going on his own both times w/o someone interupting him atleast I dont think we did).

BTW the 2nd time he went he started aggressivly (maybe playfully not sure) barking at me. Maybe by going poo he was trying to get my attention? Either way I ignored him and went to the other room.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

When a dog starts to have an accident indoors in front of you, it helps him if you will rush him outside right then--interrupt him from finishing. Then praise him for finishing outside. His barking at you, I don't know what he was trying to tell you. Possibly that he wanted out. If this dog is under 16 weeks old, he probably doesn't have very good bowel and bladder control yet. I seem to remember he is, but I'm getting so many questions these days that I can't keep the past details I've seen on all the dogs straight!
