very basic question

peggy Aug 25, 2005 02:41 PM

Is a tie necessary for a mating to be sucessful? Problem was the bitch did not whelp a litter and I am wondering if this is the reason. Breeders (experienced) have told me it doesn't matter if there is a tie or not, and that it is the female who itiniates the tie.
Again I have been told otherwise by other breeders. Would appreciate the correct answer.

A tie is not necessary. I used to have a stud dog who, if he ejaculated within 25 feet of the bitch, she's get pregnant. He never missed <G>.

The reasons bitches don't conceive almost always have to do with timing, and sometimes have to do with health issues. A repro vet would be my next stop, to understand what's going on. And I HIGHLY recommend progesterone timing testing. It removes all the guesswork.
