New problem question

embibble Sep 08, 2005 06:42 AM

Ok new question.

What do you do with your dogs when you are incapeable of giving them your needed attention and training? I mean most of the time I can keep an eye on him and make sure he isnt mauling our company by accident. But other times it isnt possible or I am not available when training is needed? What do you do in situations like this?

One more thing. What can you do if someone in your family insists on un-training? Not intentionally but my mother tends to un-train him often. She says she feels bad for him. Hence the reason they insist on not-crate-training him. We have 'accidents' on the floor quite often, and its always my fault for not taking him out often enough. We also purchased a halti device for him. Which, if you've never tried one, is well worth trying. It truely works wonders. But either way I'm still trying to get him use to having it on, and they insist on taking it off him when ever he paws at it and even when hes not.

Anyone else encounter somthing similar to this? They make me fairly angry sometimes.

Thanks!

-It depends on the situation- if the behaviors the dog is exhibiting are just too much and I am unable to deal with my dogs, then they get put away- either crate, room, etc where they can't continue to make a bad behavior habit.

-Training people is harder than training dogs. Now, some incredibly smart dogs just get used to the fact that certain individuals they can get away with bad behavior around and others don't tolerate it. IF your pup isn't able to make that distinction, you are just going to have to explain that nothing you are doing is any different than proper discipline and guidence for the pup. Maybe they could join an obedience class with you and see how to train? I feel for you, it's not that easy. Good luck and just do your best.

It is not safe to leave a Halti on the dog unless he is on leash and the other end in your hand. Otherwise it needs to be off. That thing will leave marks on your dog's face if over-used, and is capable of strangling him, dislocating or breaking his jaw and other horrible things if it gets caught or tangled. It is only for training with your full attention on a short leash.

When you're not watching the dog, he needs a safe place to be. It can be larger than a crate.
