Aussie/Collie Mix - Chewing on everything!!

MommyofJoli Sep 09, 2005 07:01 PM

Hey all! I'm new to the message board, but I have a few questions. We have a little 10 mo. Australian Shepherd/ Collie mix named Joli. (I'll get some pics up soon!) She is very well natured, is very loving, loves to sit in laps, and it just very well-tempered. But, when mommy and daddy leave her out for even just 20 mins when we leave the house, Joli will chew on everything; the coffee table, tv wires, extension chords, my check book! She has also been known to get into the trash cans and eat food off of the counter. We know we need to start leaving her out and getting use to this (we don't like it when Joli is in her crate all day, we are both students), but at the risk of her destroying our house? Help!

I think I already know the question to this one already, but what are some effective grooming techniques to reduce shedding? She isn't allowed at my folks house because she sheds entirely too much. Is there anything we can do besides daily brushing, weekly bathing, and feeding her good food? What is the best kind of food for her anyways? Thanks so much!

A thorough daiy combing with a good comb such as the Belgium-made Greyhound comb will control the shedding. Bathing isn't necessary for shedding. Everyone has a different idea on food. Leaving the dog out to chew is the wrong approach. Check the link below my signature and read the article "Destructive Chewing." It explains what to do.
