What is best for my dog?

mrmickey Sep 10, 2005 03:36 PM

I'm new here, and needing advice about my 10yr old doggie. He is a mix of Maltese and Terrier, and is VERY people oriented. My problem is that my family is planning a four day trip, and I'm not sure which care option is better for him.
Previously, we have asked a friend to come by twice a day-am and pm-but for 4 days I really hate to leave Mickey alone that much. He howls at night and of course he uses the carpet as a bathroom.
I am leery about leaving him in a kennel. He gets upset when I take him to the groomer. Would he be better off at someone else's house?-it would be someone he doesn't know. Nothing seems to be a good answer. I would love to take him on the trip but there is a cat where we are going.
I would appreciate any advice!!!
Thanks

Hi and welcome to the DogHobbyist. Would the friend who has stopped by previously be willing to take Mickey for the four days? How is Mickey with a crate? If it's possible to take Mickey with you, he can always stay in the crate and when not in the crate he can be leashed to you so he doesn't bother the cat. The only other alternative would be to find someone he knows to stay with. Good Luck!

Do you have a friend or family member that would be willing to stay for four days at your house with him?
I stayed at my aunts house for 14 days to take care of her dog, 3 adult cats and 5 kittens.

agree with Bob. If he was boarded, he'd probably stay crated/confined alot. so even though he may not be happy in a crate (if you took him with you) at least you'd know he was safe & you would have some time to spend with him, even letting him sleep crated by your bed at night?

often a water squirt bottle is helpful, if he was getting really loud/ frenzied over the cat.

you can make the crate a very happy place with a treat filled toy & at times have it out where you are visiting (maybe even cover it with a sheet), or off in a quiet corner.

you just have to decide on the best plan, since none are really easy. IMO, the crate might give you some difficulties (assuming your dog is not crate trained), but is the better option.

Thank you all for your suggestions. After thinking about them, I think I will ask a friend to keep Mickey at her home for the 4 days. She is older and doesn't work, so there would be someone with him all day. Mickey isn't familiar with her, but I think he would do well there. Now let's hope she says yes!
Thanks again for your help. :>
