how do I train him?

ozzysmom Sep 20, 2005 09:43 AM

My Ozzy is a siberian Husky/Black lab and weighs 100lbs. He pulls when we walk him. Hubby got him a lead and trained him and it worked for a bit but now he's back to pulling. Hubby walks him more than I do while I walk my mini eskimo. But I would like to walk him too but get too frustrated.
What command words do I use and stick with and when do I use them???
Do I practice with him in our yard first or in an open field where all the distractions are?
I have small treats to reward him with. Oh, Ozzy is 6 years old.

At the link below my signature is an article on Loose-Leash walking that explains how to teach it. You might also consider a head halter temporarily. And check out the article Eye Contact for more finesse in your control with the dog.

I think two good command words would be heel and forward. One of the better training aids for leash and walk training is the head halter or even a gentle leader. These are very safe to use and help prevents the dog from pulling. They are also very useful at getting the dog to go the same way you go. Quite simply they are a harness that goes over the dogs snout and is hooked to another collar or harness, since the dog is going to go where the nose is pointed it is a great training aid. You can start the training right at your own home, distractions and all is a good way to teach him.
To start with I would have Ozzie on my left side with a loose leash, if he knows sit, have him sit. Take one one step forward and say forward(or come) and stop. If Ozzie moves and then stops with you praise him...if he doesn't stop pull the leash taut, bring him back to you and say heel. Have him sit and repeat the process. When he has figured this out, slowly increase the distance you move and have Ozzie move and stop with you...praising him each time he does what is asked. With some time and patience he will soon be walking with you and you can enjoy walking with him as well as your Eskie. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.

Well, After I posted my question, I did a web search and came across a few training web sites and they pretty much said the same thing so I practiced in my yard first and it took like 6 times for him to figure out to walk besides me and not pull..then we ventured out to the sidewalk and I had to stop a total of maybe 3 times on the walk, which took about 30 minutes.
I thought he would be harder to train but he caught on real good and maybe its just me but he seems to listen to me better, even in the house and more obiediant with me now. I guess I established my role with him. I plan on training him more today to make sure it stays with him.
thanks for the advice.
