Current Taxonomic Designations of African Naja?

crotalus75 Oct 09, 2003 05:45 PM

I am looking for a completely up to date listing with photographs of all the currently recognized species and subspecies of African Naja. Something similair to Dr. Wusters information on Asian Naja.

Thanks.

There is no similar website for the African species, to my knowledge. The best thing, as far as listings are concerned, would be the EMBL database - they have photo links for many of the individual species accounts. Failing that, for photos, you can always try images.google.com and type in the species name.

If you need help with anything specific, let me know ad I will try to answer.

Cheers,

That will be his stock answer until I can finally convince him that we need to combine our heads on a book that marries forever taxonomy and toxinology What the snakes really are and what they've really got in their venom. Things on all accounts are so not what people think they are, particularly most toxinologts when it comes to anything even remotely related to taxonomy related.

Its no so much a situation of 'No Cindy, there really isn't a Santa Claus'.

But rather 'Daddy drinks because you cry'.

Anyone here want to help put some pressure on him

LOL! You don't have to convince me that we need to do this, I am more than convinced already! You need to sort me a winning lottery ticket that allows me to quit my job and make time for doing it!

Cheers,

Thanks WW. I have already looked at the EMBL database, but there aren't pics for all species. Some of the pic links are dead. I use the google image search often, but it is sometimes hard to know if the the pics are actually of the specific species or subspecies. I wish that there was some detailed head, hood and full body pics out there.

I for one think that BGF's book idea sound absolutely fantastic! I would love to get my hands on a copy of a book like that!
