Training a Lab

lizard66 Oct 03, 2005 02:44 PM

I have been thinking about getting a Labrador Retreiver puppy, and I want to train it to flush upland game birds, and also retreive waterfowl. My dad and I are both avid hunters and dogs can sometimes TRIPLE the amount of game oportunities! The only problem is that I live in the city, but I live next to the communitie's private lake. How could I train my Lab to excell in hunting pheasents, quail, and waterfowl, even though I live in the city? Are there any good books to read? When should I start training a puppie, and when should I start obedience training? Thanks for the help.

Perhaps some of the hunters you know with dogs will tell you what area trainers they use. You can also check the AKC website, www.akc.org, and look up the retriever breed and field trial clubs in your state.
