How To Start A Lab Rescue

bernda Oct 04, 2005 11:10 AM

I really REALLY love labs and I am very passionate about them. I'm not sure but I think I might be interested in having something to go with labs as my career. I want to help them and find homes for them and such. How does someone start a rescue for labs as a career? How would I go about it? Could someone please give me some info and fill me in? Thanks.

Start by getting involved with an existing rescue, whether a local one or a national. Sheila Booth has a good book on Purebred Rescue, too. Don't go it alone. There are too many people already doing this, many of them doing it very badly and giving rescue a bad name. It's also very unfair to the dogs. Start out with a reputable organization and learn the ropes before deciding about doing it on your own.

I am really passionate about Dogs in general but specifically Labrador Retrievers. I want to raise them and rescue them from the pound and just save them. I think I would want to make a living out of this. Like a 24/7 job all the time. If I were to do this I'm not sure on how I would profit financially. I need to make a living and need money to provide the dogs with everything they need. Is there anything out there like that? I just really love dogs and I may want to focus all my attention and time on them, I'm just not sure how I would make a living out of this to support myself.

Most people who make a living working with dogs do several things. Good breeding is not profitable, and neither is responsible rescue work. You can make a living doing something like working for a guide dog school. You would work with many Labs, since Labs are the #1 breed for guide dogs. You might be able to make a living as a professional dog show handler, or other job providing a service to dogs and their owners.

Remember that any job with dogs is also a job with people. The dogs have to have people to take care of them, and if you can't relate well to people, you won't be able to take proper care of the dogs by getting them into the right homes and working with the owners afterward.

Hook up with someone doing rescue now. As far as doing it for a career i don't know how feesable that is. Most of the people I know that run rescues or work with them volunteer. I just think it is easier to do something you actually make money in and then take some in. You may have moe to give that way. My last two rescues were labs. they are such sweeties but a lot of them need really close individual attention and thats easier to give without having ten other dogs. they just showed up at my door I also know a couple people that go to the pound and pick up the next dog or two that will be euthenized. the pounds nad shelters are full of labs I'd show you a pic of the two I had in but photobuckett seems to be down.

i was lucky that the people that adopted them not only live right next to me but the woman works at a vet office so spay and neuter was very cheap for her. they look great now nad it really is all so worth it. good luck
