How often should I feed my yorkie?

strump82 Oct 11, 2005 06:26 PM

I have a 14 month old Yorkie named Shorty. We currently feed him approximately 3/4 a cup of Purina One Pro Plan Small Breed Adult Formula twice a day (morning and evening). We have been feeding him this type of food for several months (at least 3). In the past month, he has pooped in his crate during the day every single day. The food hasn't changed, our routine hasn't changed. He used to hold it all day while we were at work!!! Now everyday when we get home we have to clean his crate and basically give him a bath because he gets poops all over himself. We tried putting shoeboxes in the crate to give him less room to move around since supposedly he won't want to sit in his own poop, but Shorty doesn't seem to mind it. Pleeeeease give us some advice!! Would feeding him only once a day (in the evening 5pm-ish) be okay? Thanks in advance!!

Tough case. Certainly feeding a young dog less than twice a day is not a good idea. Their blood sugars fluxuate quite a bit as it is.

I hope others can help you out on the potty issue. Do you make sure you take your pup outside to relive himself after eating? Some dogs take about 30 minutes after eating to relieve themselves.

First off, at 14 months, this pup is just that... a PUP. You wouldn't expect a 12 month old baby to be potty trained would you?

Secondly the best thing you can do is NOT leave the dog locked up for long periods of time, i.e. all night or all day. That's asking a lot for a young dog.

I find that when I have a "difficult" pup, its easist to put them in a confined area... I use a 2x3 pen with paper in one end and bedding in the other.

Don't feed after 7 pm, and make sure that the pup goes out for a good romp about 2 hours after eating.

Less food is not going to do anything but invite problems like hypoglycemia. My kids from 8 to 20 weeks get 4 meals a day, from 5 months (20 weeks) to 18 months they get 3 meals a day and after that 2 meals a day. Plus I free feed dry, which means its available any time they want it.

Be patient and be Consistent! Those are your two best weapons in the house training war.
