I spoke too soon..

When we decided Kaiser had to be pts, I had to return to school for an exam that day. My dad was to take Kaiser in to the vet first thing that morning. They couldn't get an appointment and were booked for Wednesday morning. My dad didn't tell me because there was no point in upsetting me further.

The couple that was over for dinner we've only known for a few months. A very sweet older couple. Kaiser bit the woman as she reached to pet him after forgetting our warnings not to. The husband, we found out that evening, has been training dogs for 40 years and has an impressive veterinary background.

So Tuesday night, Bob called my dad and told him that there was a program on tv he should watch. There was a trainer dealing with dogs just like Kaiser - biting for strange reasons, and not giving any warning. Within 3 weeks this trainer had many of these dogs turned right around. Bob came over and got some more history from me and then went and spent some time with Kaiser.

Kaiser is going to stay at my parents' house where Bob and my dad are going to work with him to implement this training program. I don't know a lot about it yet but I can't believe the confidence with which Bob and my dad are going after this.

I'm not getting my hopes up - I believe that an aggressive dog won't change. But they want to try to turn Kaiser around and are very confident that they will succeed. It's a last ditch effort but at this point, I'd rather take the time to try it out than rush to have him pts.

So Kaiser was NOT PTS, although I firmly believed that he was. I'm sorry that I led everyone to believe that. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens. If it works, wonderful. If not, we'll be back where we started and he'll be PTS.. I don't really know what to think about the whole thing, but that's a lot of coincidences. Couldn't get into the vet, he bit a dog trainer's wife, then this show happened to be on right while we're going through this...

Wow Leah! What a range of emotions to have gone through the last few days. I'm glad that Kaiser is still with us and hopefully Bob and your Dad can get Kaiser to turn the corner. Keep your chin up Leah...there is a good boy dog in Kaiser and I'm sure they will find it!! Please keep us updated as to the training...we'll all be rooting for Kaiser.

If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.

My goodness! Range of emotions is putting it mildly. I'm happy to hear that he is going to get another chance. For everyone's sake, I do hope this works. I can understand your not wanting to get your hopes too high. Good luck on this!

Dogs come into our lives, and too quickly go leaving pawprints on our hearts, and we will never be quite the same again.

OK, that's an odd message to read. Giving Kaiser one last attempt at rehab with another professional is not a horrible idea. Good luck with the new regime. I hope it does as reported.

Goodness I can't imagine how you feel. First I am in tears because he had to be PTS then I read the next message and he wasn't after all. He isnt' even my dog and I am feeling this way. I do hope it works out for the best Liah.

just curious.. was the trainer on the TV Cesar Millan? he does alot of work with troublesome dogs and runs the dog psychology center in L.A. .

I hope the new training works out for Kaiser, best of luck w/ him!

No, this trainer wasn't Milan.. Im glad, I've heard that his tactics are often fairly aggressive and overly dominant.. I've never seen the guy but if that is the case, I don't think his tactics would help my dog.. In fact, they would likely make it much worse. Kaiser does not respond well to exercises in tough love..

Wow!!

Whoa, and wow...

I can only imagine to be in your shoes...

1st, thank you for posting and saying what is happening (it shows your depth of character).

2nd, amazing that Kaiser has such good folks always looking to do everything they can for him. He's one blessed doggie! To get you as an owner and to have your dad back you with him so much. Then throw in a person who's a new acquaintance?

This sounds like a pretty solid technique, give him something else to focus on. Give him a job that directly contradicts the behavior. It's respecting him and where he is at. Teaching him an alternative without telling him he can't do the other, just create a larger desire to do the new behavior. It also sounds like a LOT of work. I will be sending the best positive thoughts Kaisers way.

I can only imagine that there's hope and trepidation for you at the same time... Let's see if hope can persevere for your beautiful boy

Hang in there Leah.

Thank you for your support everyone.. It's been a crazy, crazy journey with Kaiser so far and it's very difficult not to get my hopes up when my dad, by far the individual I respect the most in my life, is so confident..

He has said that Kaiser will stay there as long as it takes - whether it's a couple of weeks, until Christmas, or more than a year or two..

Apparently he's learning well so far, they start moving into the strange environments Monday.. I'll keep everyone here updated as to how he's doing..

Wow! This is good news. I hope your dad and Bob can help this dog. We'll take any bit of hope. . .

Jessie226 Oct 19, 2005 02:57 PM

Whew! I was so heartbroken there for a minute...thank goodness it was only for a minute.
I really hope you have success with these new trainers, why not at least give it a shot, right? Maybe it was meant to be, kaiser biting the girl, her husband ends up being a dog trainer. not that I think it should have come to that, but you never know.
The best, best, best of luck to you leah. Both of you will be in my prayers...
