ADOPTED COONHOUND WITH PROBLEMS!

lizard66 Oct 27, 2005 11:03 PM

Recently, I was considering getting either a Lab or a coonhound. I visited the local shelter and found a female bluetick coonhound, about 7 months old. My family and I thought about getting her. After thinking about it, we decided to get her. I wanted a dog that I could hunt with, something that we, me and my dog, could do for fun. After getting her, we noticed a couple of problems. I know coonhounds tend to bark alot, but when we put our bluetick outside, she whines, yelps, and barks when we are not there? Why does she do that? How can I prevent the barking? We keep her inside in a crate at night, so she wont keep the neighbors up. She wines and cries in there too. She loves to sit with me on the couch and watch Tv with me. Is there any way I can convert her to like staying outside? How much exercise should I give her daily? I know that when dogs are young, you dont want to over-exercise them. Will thorough exercise reduce the amount of whining? Also, if anybody here knows, how can I get her started on hunting, are there any good information available for training coonhounds? Thanks alot for the help because right know I really need it.

Exercise for your dog will help out a lot with the whining and barking. For a dog that age, I would not recommend long distance running on pavement or jumping activities, but long walks (1 hour or more), especially on grassy trails, would not be extreme.

Obedience training will also help you out in a number of ways. First, a dog with a tired mind is a happy dog and won't whine or bark. Yet, it will also help you out with your eventual goal of hunting with your dog.

Personally, I'm not a fan of leaving dogs outdoors during the day in a kennel run. Yet, I'm well aware that many do it and seem to do it successfully as long as the dog gets enough stimulation throughout the day.

The United Kennel Club has a magazine specifically devoted to this breed. It covers traning and all other aspects of owning a coon hound. You might want to check out their website and get a subscription to the magazine. That should be able to point you toward resources in your area that can get you started with hunting and overall obedience.

This breed is intentionally bred to be LOUD. To see why, read the article on Coonhound events I wrote, found at the link below my signature. While you're at it, read the one on Backyard Hazards, too. Your dog is better off as an inside dog, for a whole bunch of reasons. And the noise isn't likely to be something you can get rid of by training. Not in this breed.

she needs some company - you or another dog, dogs are pack animals, she is lonely & probably bored.

we live out in the country & there are who knows what kinds of critters in the woods surrounding us - so our dogs are in 'hunt' mode frequently & loud about it!

there is a sight/message board that has lots of hunting dogs info squirreldog.com

it was great of you to adopt this one & I hope you can solve your difficulty. I know with lots of dogs, obedience training can help, but am just unsure about this type of dog,

I wouldn't rule it out.
