Pregnant dog agressive to mate

billv Oct 31, 2005 10:10 PM

My 4 year old GSD is pregnant, although she isn't as big as last time at this point (about 58 days). I wondered if this might be a false pregnancy. She went into heat after her last litter, and I didn't get the male separated in time (he has since been neutered). Anyway, she has been attacking him for no reason, even when no one is around, so I don't think its jealousy. He is 1 1/2, and a lot bigger than her, but he never fights back. She wasn't like this last time, and is fine to everyone else. Is this normal behavior, or is there something else going on?

My worry at this point is that she COULD have a pyometra, a uterine infection. The timing is right, and sometimes when dogs are ill, they do show uncharacteristic aggressiveness. And that is NOT typical of a pregnant bitch, although not unusual in a mother with a litter.

She should be seen by the vet for a rule-out ultrasound, to determine pregnancy or if there is an infection. In fact, even if she is pregnant, if she has an infection as well (from a dead pup, for instance), she could be in need of a C-section, and better to find that out now than when she's in labor and in distress.

Hopefully she is fine, but yes, I'd take this seriously and head for the vet.

Good luck, please come back and let us know what you find!

I took her to the vet Friday, and he said she didn't really look like she was that far along, but an Xray showed only 1 pup. She had him Sunday morning, and all went well. Will he develop emotionally without siblings? Seems like he might be lonely until he grows enough to play with the adult dogs.
Here is the Dad with a couple of his pups from last time.
Thanks, Bill
