Training in NJ

berniec Nov 01, 2005 10:25 PM

Hi everyone. I am the proud owner of a 4 month old male dobie, I got him at 9 weeks and he's been great. I do however want to go through obienence class with him since I've heard it does wonders for them and helps put them in their place so to speak. Can anyone recommend a trainer in the NJ area that they have used and were happy with, and if possible a rough idea of how much i should be looking to spend.

thanks!
Bernie

I'm not in that area so I would not be able to tell you which schools to go to nor appropriate prices for that area. Where I am, it's approximately $10 for an hour class.

Classes are always a good idea because as yo usay they are good at keeping a pup in it's place and they keep the owner motivated to train.

Have fun with your pup in the classes and keep us posted on the progress.

Dear dog,
I can not buy anything larger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think that I will continue to sleep on the couch to ensure your comfort. Look at videos of dogs sleeping, they can actually curl up in a ball. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to your fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straigt out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space used is nothing more than doggy sarcasm.

I am in SW Pennsylvania so I don't know the trainers in NJ, but I know there are several good ones. Here is a link to a website that is for trainers - you might find someone on it....not all good trainers will be on a list like this, but it is a place to start. I recommend going to a class without your dog just to observe and see if it is something that would work for you. As a price range, I would say that a session (anywhere from 6 to 10 weeks/one group lesson a week) might cost in the neighborhood of $100 - $150. You need to make sure that the trainer is familiar with Dobermans.... you would be amazed at how many trainers have no experience with them and are just clueless about what makes them tick. These are not dogs that can be "man handled". They are intellegent, sensitive, and sometimes stubborn. Positive but firm training with lots of fun and treats is what it takes.

My dog train in southeast PA, and the prices are similar to those previously mentioned: for a six-week class, I pay $145. I agree: positive training is the best.
