Biting and chewing at himself

panzerismybeagle Nov 02, 2005 04:14 PM

Its me, once again, with another issue. Panzer seems to like chewing himself....mostly his feet and his private areas. He doesn't seem to have any dry or itchy skin issues really, and those bitter sprays do not help at all. He's even chewed so much at his feet that his paw pads are suffering and bleeding at some points. It doesn't seem to matter whether he's been bathed or not recently and he hardly ever has any fleas or anything, so we really don't know what's going on. He chews on both his front and back feet, and again, in his private areas until they are pretty red and inflammed and his feet almost constantly stay soaked with doggy drool. We've taken him to the vet and they gave us some allergy shampoo and again, it made no difference.

Any ideas? Thanks again, this forum has been great!

I'm surprized your vet didn't offer anything other than an allergy shampoo for Panzer. You might want to seek the advice of another vet on this one. These are classic symptoms of an allergy, but figuring out what that allergy is from is a difficult task sometimes. Typically it's a food allergy, but not always.

I'm sorry you are having these issues. Maybe go to the vet and have an allergy test done. That's your best bet on figuring out what to do. Good luck.

Dear dog,
I can not buy anything larger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think that I will continue to sleep on the couch to ensure your comfort. Look at videos of dogs sleeping, they can actually curl up in a ball. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to your fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straigt out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space used is nothing more than doggy sarcasm.

Do you happen to know approximately what that would cost, the allergy test?

PHReign Nov 04, 2005 08:35 AM

I'm sorry I don't know the price and unfortunately even if I did, I'm sure there would be regional price differences.

If cost is a huge concern to you, you might just want to look at your dog food label. If your current food contains a lot of corn or wheat, you may want to switch to some other food brand.

Again, I'm sorry you are having troubles.

Be SURE to follow up with your vet. The first step is try the most common thing, and then the vet will try the next thing--but that can't happen until you tell the vet the problem is not fixed. This dog needs help. The problem will become far more expensive if you delay.
