Looking for a breed like this!

jmueske Nov 06, 2005 05:09 PM

Hi,

We got our dog Ranger a year ago from our local Humane Society shelter. They listed him as a "shepherd mix". We love his size and personality and would love to find another dog of the same breed. Can anyone help us out be identifying what mix he is? Our vet guessed he has some Dachshund or basset because of the leg size and shape. His hair is long (especially his tail!), and his face looks like a shepherd. He's full grown at 27 lbs.

Take a look at the photos:

If you've seen a dog like this or know a breeder, please let me know. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
Regards,
John

You might find a dog that looks like your dog and you might find a dog with the personality traits you like in your dog, but you're not likely to find a dog with both. You mentioned it's the personality you're looking for, but you didn't tell us anything about the personality. Matching the appearance is highly unlikely to match the personality. So what personality of dog are you looking for? What size, what grooming needs (long coat, short coat, coat that needs clipping, etc), how protective, how playful, how eager to train, what activities do you want to do with your dog, will the dog be around young children, will the dog need to tolerate being boarded, are you home much, will the dog live indoors...?

Thanks for the reply. We're mainly looking for what breed he is, but you bring up good points. We have a lot to think about when considering a second dog!

He definitely looks like a doxie.. I guess there may be a little shepherd there but my guess is something a bit smaller. He does have a black snout like the shepherds. His face is too, I don't know, soft and baby-like, I guess. His face doesn't have any of the maturity that even shepherd pups have..

I'm by no means an expert but he looks like an all around toy breed to me.. I can't put my finger on it but I'll be it's something (or many somethings) that weigh less than 40lbs.. Many mixes between a large breed and smaller breed will have a head that looks a bit too big for the body, whereas your guy's head seems to fit quite well.. He is adorable, I love the long ears

This is my shepherd/corgi mix..

Looks like maybe some golden in there.

to answer your question about breed it almost looks like there's some type of spaniel or maybe brittany in his lineage but it's hard to tell for sure.
maybe even some sheltie or even a hound type like beagle, there could even be some chi, looks like he has a very sharp stop, and a slightly high forehead which is a chi trait.

yeah, I'm going for the spaniel - like even Cavalier King Charles or Shelti or Corgi

I have seen several dogs similiar, but I'm a petfinder junkie & sometimes just search (beats tv)

I'd bet if you search under the above breeds & are patient/willing to travel a bit, you'll find what you are looking for -

we are familiar with a certain image of purebreds, but its true that Corgi can have 'fluff' coat & not alot of white & Cavies & Doxies can be that color/coat type too.

I'd think that if there was any hound, you'd hear it in the barks/sounds he makes...

thanks for sharing the photos -great!

"I'd think that if there was any hound, you'd hear it in the barks/sounds he makes"

thats true, aswell as if there're terrier in him, i said hound because of the ears but other breeds listed do have ears like that.

I'm changing my mind I am going to go with spaniel to.
