Growth question...

vrulli Nov 21, 2005 11:09 AM

Hello there!

I love seeing pictures of Dobermans on this forum! Inuki is very beautiful, and that is a nice photo showing the whole look of the dog. How much does she weigh?

I have a question regarding my dobe Tiara. She seems quite small so far for an almost 8 month old girl. Currently she weighs 39.5 lbs. She was ill last week and lost some of her condition–now she's better and begining to gain some of her weight back.

She is about the same weight before she was spayed–about a month ago. Her condition was determined "excellent" by the vet at her pre-surgery examination.

My question is, do dobes continue to grow taller up to a year? What can I expect now until she is finished growing.

P.S. some background info: Her mom was quite petite and her dad was at the max height for the standard.

The rate of growth really varies between lines..some lines get all their height by 6 months of age or so, some grow more slowly over a longer period of time. Generally, most dobermans have all the height they're going to have by the time they're a year old, after that they'll continue to bulk up for a bit longer.

I haven't weighed my puppy (a little over 6 months old) lately, but she was right around 43 lbs. at 5 months old.

It sounds low to me but my boy didn't grow into himslef to at least two. I cna not remember what he weighed at eight months though! What are you feeding her?

Thank you both for the replies.

I am feeding her about 4 cups a day. She eats Eagle Pack large breed puppy food. I believe this to be a good food for dobermans--at least this is what her breeder started her on. I am begining to inch on a bit more food at each mealtime (2X per day). About every other day she gets a kong stuffed with peanut butter--her favorite!

I am hoping that the latter is correct--she is growing at a slow steady rate. I have not measured her at the withers yet.

My husband and I both look at her and think, "What a tiny doberman we have!" I guess I am very anxious as to what her adult height would be.

Thanks!

My boy dobie just turned 9 months on the 18th and is right around 83 lbs. 39 lbs does seem low to me , but how does she look?

Thanks for the comment on Inuki! She was only 7 months in that picture, it was a few months ago. I think she weighed only like 50 lbs. She is now 9 months and has gained 12 lbs. Like you we are feeding her 4-5 cups of Pro Plan adult food. As of now she stands 26 inches high and she is 24 inches long. We think she is still small too especially in her head and face, she still has that puppy face!! Looking back though, she gained 12lb. in 2 months, so I guess they plateu for a while.

Just a comment, when Inuki was younger like 4-6 months, she stayed at her weight for a while, then all of a sudden shot up.

Thanks for the replies!

I am very curious about how others noticed their dobes growth. It is funny, people say she looks bigger each time they see her.

Right now she is 24 1/2 inches at the shoulder, and is about 43 lbs. She looks healthy–no bones potruding. She looks like a long-distance runner (and runs about our house like one!)

Have any of you begun agility training? How are your dobes doing, any pointers? We are enrolled in Pre-Agility and she is just getting used to the new equiptment.
