I'm torn!

NiceRhac Nov 21, 2005 04:58 PM

Hey everyone, I'm torn. My fiancee and I have decided that we would like to get a pup since kids are far off and we don't have anyone to spoil but ourselves and our families...and they're spoiled enough, lol. We really aren't too picky on colors, but we do want a sweet one with a huge personality Chris and I can't decide on which gender. We've picked out names for either gender, but he wants a girl...and I want a little boy. You can see why we don't have kids yet, lol. I searched the forum previous to posting and didn't find much at all. What's your take on this? little boy or little girl???

Welcome!!!! I don't have much experience with chihuahuas, but from my experience once the dog is neutered or spayed there is very little personality difference between a male or female dog. There's the obvious issues of leg lifting for males, but I know numerous male dogs that don't life their leg either.

I say, go to a breeder and not have a set idea of male or female for your pup's gender. It gives the breeder a better opportunity to pick the best puppy for you overall anyway.

Dear dog,
I can not buy anything larger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think that I will continue to sleep on the couch to ensure your comfort. Look at videos of dogs sleeping, they can actually curl up in a ball. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to your fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straigt out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space used is nothing more than doggy sarcasm.

I agree with PHReign: I'd go to reputable breeder and talk with her/him. But personally, I like girl dogs.

Male Chihuahuas can be very difficult to housetrain, impossible if not neutered. If you do plan to have children, remember that the dog may well live 15 years, so be sure to get a dog with a child-friendly temperament and raise and train the dog carefully to be safe with kids.

This really is a personal preference question. Me, I always go for the girls.

As far as Chis go I've only had LaVie (a girl). My family however has had many. While I love all the little mites I can say that there's only been one boy that hit that same level of special as the girls do. Chip was a very unique boy, we still morn his loss many years later as he was lost unfairly and at a young age (neighbors out of control dog attacked him on gramma's property).

The boys seem... well, for lack of a better term, dopey to me. Just like they aren't all there, like they don't think things through but just operate on what's going on at the moment. The girls seem to be more contemplative in their actions. This is a generalization and not factual, just my observances with all my families Chis. And, not to say that a girl can't be like that.

As to the house training for boys, those remarks reflect what I've seen. But, I've also seen it with some of the girls, and not just the boys. The girls I've seen this with are the strong "alpha" personality girls.

I have a male chihuahua and my parents actually own his sister. They had a tough time housetraining her whereas my little boy trained in about a week....he still had some mistakes, but for the most part he knew what he was supposed to do. I prefer the males over the females....he has trained easier than her, and seems more loving. The downfall of him is, he is a little more leary of new people. If he knows you he is a very loving dog, but if he does not then he stays away.
