meningitis???

Ariaa Dec 06, 2005 05:29 AM

My 3.5 year old maltese cross shihtzu has been having severe shaking in her back legs every mornings within a few hours of getting up.

She hides, lying down and just shakes uncontrollably. looks very sad.

Took her to vet today, and he thinks possibly non-infectious meningitis. (mainly a maltese problem)

I am desperate for some more information.

Has anyone got experience with this, or know anything about.

She has recently been on antibiotics for anal glad infection and didn't stop it.

Has given me cortisone but wants me to avoid giving it to her unless gets severe

PLEASE HELP

Shaking of the limbs like that can be caused by a variety of symptoms. Did your vet rule out any kind of spinal injuries or take any xrays of the hind quarter? Does your pup have any difficulty walking or does the shaking subside as the day wears on? I would recommend going back to your vet or another one and have a more detailed examination done. You may want to ask about this on the Shih-Tzu forum, there are many people there who may have some answers for you. Good luck.

there is a disorder called 'syringomyelia' that is frequently seen in Cavaliers that might exhibit these & other symptoms

you need a diagnosis, to confirm or rule out, whatever it might be, so you might want to consider a second opinion.

I know a pharmacy will give out a written fact sheet on Rx, so ask the vet to do the same with any diagnosis.

you can always search

hope it is something easy to treat & she'll recover quickly

Lots of thoughts....

there could be a spine problem that an AVCA certified chiropractor could help with.

it could be a type of siezure -- reevaluate food, etc.

was your dog vaccinated within 3 months previous to the onset of the behaviour? I would be sure to not vaccinate any more in any case.

possibility of tick disease?

digestive problems? has a blood panel been run to ensure that there is low-grade pancreatitis or liver problems?

thyroid imbalance? I would have a thryoid panel run along with a blood panel.

Those are the things that I can think of off the top of my head.
