Looking for a Doberman

Hilikme Dec 12, 2005 11:44 AM

Hi,

I have been looking into getting a Doberman to be trained for assistance dog work. Having discussed this with trainers and assistance dog owners, it was decided that one of the best paths to take was to find a retired show dog (Preferably a dog between the age of 1 and 2), for example, a dog that was trained for showing but couldn't make confirmation, etc. Does anyone know where I could find a Doberman like this?

Thanks

I would first check the link for the Doberman Club of America below:

On that site they list many breeders by area that you can get in touch with. They will probably put you on a waiting list for when one becomes available of they may have a female or two that has had a few litters and is being "pet homed."

I got a retired show dog 2 years ago from a breeder. It was a wonderful decision and one I will make again when the time comes.

Good luck in your search. My guess is once you have found the right breeder, you will not have long to wait.

A dog who has had a few litters would generally be considered too old to begin assistance dog training. Her working career would be too short.
