Re Potty Training my Yorkie

dolmah5 Dec 12, 2005 02:53 PM

I have an eight month old yorkie that was doing really well going outside on its own. When the backdoor was open he would go by himself.

The problem is that I have to retrain him to go on "pet a potty" which is grass that you can put in the house. I have placed it in the bathroom. The problem is that he is now making mistaked that he didn't before and pretty much anywhere in the house.

We had to go the pet a potty route so that eventually during the day he could be set free. We cannot get a doggy door because there is a pool and a large dog next door. He can only go out if he is supervised.

I think I have confused him and feel really bad to have ruined his training. Will it take long to retrain him? Is it normal to have him go places he didn't before?....

How about fixing him a fenced and covered potty run, right out the doggy door? The results you are getting to the indoor method are typical. If he is not neutered, that urgently needs to be done, too.

I thought about the doggy run but the way the doors are on the house and where he would need to go is just not practical...Plus, there is a big dog next door that I just don't trust....I'll look into it though....who would I go to for this?

I am getting him neutered on Tuesday...

Most likely the fence thing won't happen , soooo Will he eventually be potty trained to just go on the pet a potty or is it that it is inside and he will be confused?....I don't mind spending the time to train him as long as I know he will get it someday that other places in the house are off limits......Is this too confusing for him?....

Thanks

Many dogs never get it when it comes to using some sort of indoor potty method. It's just too confusing for them.

If he is 8 months.. sound like he is coming into adult hood.
If he is not fixed.. males will mark..you might try using a bellyband..they sometimes work in helping train males.
I use one on my male when he is running the house..so he does not pee on everything.
I also use potty training pads in the dog room...Good luck to you..Sherry
