White GSDs?

lucille Dec 15, 2005 03:51 AM

The AKC standard says white coated dogs are disqualified; but I see more and more advertised, what's up with that?

Lucille it is the same with my breed of dog the Shiba Inu. There are three recognized color coats and yet the creams are not considered. It is considered to be a fault and the reputable Shiba breeders will not breed dogs that have produced cream Shibas. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the dog, in fact it could be the best of the litter and show quality yet cannot be shown. It might be close to the same with your GSD's.

My best guess is that it depends on who's advertising them. I'm meeting an increasing number of breeders who think like me - "who cares what the CKC or AKC think. Showing is not the be-all end-all deciding factor for a good dog." If the dogs are healthy, the parents have been properly cared for and tested, and the breeder shows all the other traits of a responsible breeder, why not? They may not be recognized now but the list of recognized breeds is growing all the time to add other dogs that weren't considered acceptable before..

I think it's only a matter of time before white gsds are added to the list, they just need enough of a track record to be proven as healthy as the regular ones..

I really wish people didn't care at all what these kennel clubs think, but that's another topic..
