Need Help

sunlight Dec 16, 2005 10:36 AM

Hi Guys,
I have a 4 yrs. old female GSD(rescued), she is still coming out of stresses and fears but she loves people and plays with other dogs. Is it a good idea to rescue another GSD(6 monts)right now who needs a home too ?
Please send me all those experienced opinion as soon as you could.
Thanks,
Sunlight and Cleopatra

well I would say this totally depends on you and the current dog you have..Do you think she would benefit from another dog?
In one way, having another dog who is say, more confident CAN help a stressy dog..But another way, you may want to work with the dog you have , get her where you want her and then add another dog..

Hard decision, but good luck

Hi Diane,
Thanks a lot for your reply, I am thinking the same way you mentioned, she loves to play with other dog that I know very well. Now, the question is there any BREED who will be very calm by nature? any idea? I have a hope that it might help her.

Thanks,

I thought you were looking at another gsd? Maybe I misunderstood?

As for another breed that would be calm,,if your going the rescue route, which is a good idea, most older puppies/adults in reputable rescues are pretty well screened, so that would be a big help in locating one that you feel would do well with your gsd.

Not necessarily a "breed" as it would be an individual dog. I have australian shepherds as well as gsd's..and let me tell ya, they are as different as night and day..My female aussie is very demanding/high energy, where the male out of working lines, is much more "go with the flow"..Yet he is not real good with dogs he doesn't know, she loves everybody..I'd never stick her with a dog who needs "calmness" LOL..

Ok done rambling,,find a reputable rescue and go from there if that's your desire,,keep in mind herding dogs (other than the gsd) can be really high maintenance..

You were right, I was about to rescue one 6 months old GSD but in the very last moment the ownder changed her mind and we are very upset. So, I am wondering if there any breed who does need very little maintanance? Of course, they are all different. How about Goldens in general? I heard people are saying they are very mellow!! Or should I look for a saller breed? Walking would be easier -LOL.

Thanks a lot. Let's see what I could do.

I agree with the above poster. Taking in a new VERY confident dog can help your current dog. They do learn from each other. Yet, if the new dog yo uare considering has "baggage" as well, you might want to forgo it for now and work with your current dog only. Dogs living together learn the good and the bad from each other. It just all depends. Maybe have the two meet and go from there?

Thanks for your reply. Since, the owner changed her mind so I could not rescue that GSD pup. So, I would get more time to work on my GSD- I guess. yeah, my plan was to take my dog and meet the other one first but the ownner did not like the idea too. But, I would definitely do that if I go for other one.
Thanks,
Sunlight
