training ideas?

Rouen Dec 20, 2005 12:52 PM

I need some ideas for "tricks" to teach Dingo, he catches on very quickly(taught him "target" in less than 10 minutes) I've made a list of almost everything he knows, I've tried teaching him other simple things like "roll over" or "sit up" but he never really got the hang of those mainly just need things to keep his mind busy. I'd appreciate any input.

Teaching dog "tricks" really is only limited by your imagination.

There are a few books on the market, but overall, I try to think up things that will help me out like: Go get your leash, go left, go right, open this, Turn off the light, turn on the light, get my (whatever you want), go find "dad dog," go to bed, crawl under, etc.

Then there are a few fun ones. One of my favorite tricks is I taught my dog to go to a blanket and pull the blanket over herself. I call it "take a nap." I also have her chasing her tail on command. One of my friend's has their dog grab their tail and bring it to them.

The ideas are endless. Your dog will have an aptitude for certain things and not others. Just play and see what behaviors he throws at you. You can even get you dog to sneeze on command if your timing is good. Have fun and play. You'll think of stuff.

Dear dog,
I can not buy anything larger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think that I will continue to sleep on the couch to ensure your comfort. Look at videos of dogs sleeping, they can actually curl up in a ball. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to your fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straigt out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space used is nothing more than doggy sarcasm.

The book "How to Teach Your Dog to Talk," by Captain Haggerty has tricks and techniques that are state of the art and include a huge amount of variety.

To add to the list, you could teach "give paw" or "shake" (since Dingo already knows wave paw). Agility might be fun too.
