hookworms

dragonpuppy Dec 21, 2005 06:41 AM

hi my 7 month old boxer puppy, georgie, has been in the hospital for a couple of days. we brought him in because he wasn't eating and he was really tired. right before we took him he had bloody diarhea. when we got him to the vet they found out he had 104 fever, and a tender abdomen. they took x-rays and didn't see anything. they did some blood test and the blood count was a little low. they think it might be hookworms but they dont know for sure because they cant get a stool sample. he just wont eat and when nothing comes in, nothing goes out. does anybody know what their next move would be. i read that puppies are most likely to die from hookworms and immunity isn't developed until 8 to 11 months of age. they have him on iv fluids but that all that i know that they're doing for him. anybody else had to deal with this before? if so, what happened to your dog?

Dogs develop some immunity to roundworms, but not to hookworms. They can get hookworms over and over, such as from a yard that is not kept picked up from feces. It sounds like your dog is in the right place, receiving hospital care. If they think it's hookworms, he's probably anemic, too, because hookworms attach to the intestinal wall and consume the dog's blood. Roundworms hang out in the intestines and eat food that comes by, but they leave cysts in the body that cause the infestation to be passed to the mother dog's pups. Roundworms are not terribly dangerous, but hookworms are, especially to puppies and small dogs who can't spare the blood.
