What do I do when potty training is going no where?

AskMeAboutMyChi Dec 27, 2005 08:47 AM

I've had my chihuahua for a little over a month. He is now 15 weeks old. He's doing splendidly with regular training. We are so proud of him (and he knows it). Within the last month, he's learned to do all of the following: sit, stay, come, roll over, dance, jump up, crawl, shake, lay down, do a 360 and follow. He works well on a leash and is working perfectly on and off of the leash. We, however, have made little progress with potty training. He knows to go potty outside but he often only tinkles. That doesn't bother me, but we'll bring him back inside and he'll poo on the floor. If I catch him in the act, I shout his name and put him outside. We watch from the window until he's done what he needs to do and then we bring him back inside with "great job! What a good boy, Tux!" He has no problems with tinkling outside and will sometimes poo as well...but 9 times out of 10...he prefers pooing on the floor. It's amazing how quickly he can do it too! When he's on the floor, I'm watching his every move. The other day, I tossed a ball for him to retrieve and it rolled beneath the table. He ran for it, took a second to get it into his mouth, and brought it back. He was out of my sight for about 7 seconds. A few hours later, I found a little surprise in the same exact area! This isn't the worst part. The worst part is when we'll lay down on the couch with him. Since he's a pup, he's still taking catnaps as we watch football or talk about our day. More than once, he's snuggled up to my boyfriend's neck or sat on his forehead and slept. When he needs to pee, he won't even say anything...he'll get up, move into a position to keep the tinkle from getting on himself and let 'er rip! I can understand that he's, perhaps, not getting notice until the very moment he must tinkle...but in that instance, it's only fair for dog and human to both get tinkle on them! I love Tux with all of my heart, but I'm ready to strap a diaper onto his hind end! ANY TIPS?!?!

I'm so sorry. Potty trainign can be so incredibly tough at times, especially with little dogs.

You need to go back to the basics. Crate Tux when you can't watch him 100% of the time. Put him on a schedule for going outside- every 30 minutes would be fair at this point. Go out with Tux and reward lavishly the moment he does what you want outside (waiting until he's inside to reward doesn't give him the correct message). Just be patient and consistent. Dogs need to go right potty right after waking up (so when he's taking his cat naps you bring him out right away when he's woken up or you wake him up to take him out), after eating, and after drinking.

It will get better with just a bit of better timing on your parts.

Dear dog,
I can not buy anything larger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think that I will continue to sleep on the couch to ensure your comfort. Look at videos of dogs sleeping, they can actually curl up in a ball. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to your fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straigt out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space used is nothing more than doggy sarcasm.
