My family and I are toying with the idea of getting a Great Dane. I know that they are special dogs with different needs from normal dogs so I have lots of questions before I buy (which won't be anytime real soon).
I currently have a lab and a rat terrier. How are they with other dogs? How about children? I have a five year old.
I don't like to pen up or chain my dogs. They have free range in and out of the house. I live and work on a 14000 acre wildlife ranch so getting hit by a car is not a problem.
My dogs go to work everyday with me and get LOTS of exercise. Could too much exercise cause bone problems with a dog like a Dane? There's a lot of jumping in and out of the back of a truck.
Has anyone had their Great Dane wander a lot when they have free range? I need my dogs to stay within shouting distance of the house. Any farther and they get into trouble-chasing deer and whatnot.
Please let me know your opinions. I like dogs too much to bring one into an environment where it won't adapt well.
