wow a 12lb yorkie?? that is huge.. mine don't get nearly that size.. my biggest is only 6.5 lbs. You sure he's a yorkie?? if he is.. then he will need lots of exercise to loose some weights. Less eating and more exercise. once a day feeding is all a yorkie needs as they are little dogs.

hmmm. . . . yeah ppl have been saying that he was just bred large. he's not fat at all, in fact you can feel his spine and he doesn't have any fat, just skin. he's just a large yorkie. so once a day huh? i read it's suppose to be like 6.0 oz? is that for the whole entire day? because lately i've gotten him to eat more, what should i do? my mom says to feed him twice a day (she used to have a jack russel and that's what she did for her) so she said that would be ok since both of the dogs are about the same size? pls help me. thank you

Nella,
Dogs are just like human, they eat when the are hungry. Some dogs eat more than others. Since your dog is larger than mine, of course he will eat more. But keep in mind that the more food goes in him, the more you know what will come out. So if you don't want to be picking up poops all day long, reducing his consumption is the key. I only feed my dogs once a day. I work all day and they stay in their place until I come back home. When I get home, I let them out to play and to eat. Dogs usually poops within 30 minutes of their eating, so this help out with the cleaning. They do all the eating and then pooping outside. ANd then they go rubble around all over the yard until its time to go to sleep. Make sure they have plenty of water all day. But they can go without food until 4 or 5pm.

Ahh, this is not necessarily true. I have Several rescues in my home that are 12 pounds and some of them actually eat less than my 3 pounder.

Yorkies CAN be bigger. They were originally bred from "Bigger" dogs, and they haven't been around much more than 100 years or so. Therefore these genetic differences can show up from time to time. Personally, I'd take bigger over those little tiny "always have to worry about them" types ANYDAY.

Nothing wrong with a 12 pounder! Just more to love!

that is so true to think about it. I just bought a 8wks old tea cup yorkie for $900 last thurs. Two days later she become hypoglycemic. Luckily I caught it in time. I quickly fed her some Karo syrup. And then force fed her some food but she reject everything. I then force fed some "super cal" and inject pedialite into her mouth. THat did the trick as she came back to life. But as of now, she's still not out of danger yet. I worry about her right now as I am at work.

Boy if you paid 900 for a "teacup" yorkie, you got taken.

There is no such thing as a "teacup" yorkie, they are all toy dogs and if you paid extra because of that stupid label someone saw you coming.
