CRATE TRAINING

chloejane Jan 05, 2006 08:39 PM

My cousin is concerned that keeping her boxer puppy in a crate will stunt her growth. She says that since fish and snakes kept in aquariums do not grow to their fullest size compared to those in the wild and she concerned that by putting her puppy in a crate she will not grow to her fullest size. Does anyone have any input on this?

Crate training does not mean "keeping" a dog in a crate! The crate should be used the absolute minimum amount of time needed, when there is no way to supervise the pup and not for longer in a day and night than the dog would sleep anyway. If this is exceeded, yes, you would harm the dog's physical growth as well as her emotional and mental development. Every minute someone is available to watch the pup, she needs to be out of the crate learning and playing and being loved.
