is it okay to put my chi in her crate for time out?

jerome707 Jan 12, 2006 12:16 AM

she usually just roams around the living room. she doesn't spend time in her crate that often. i put her in there for about half and hour or more then i wake up to accustom her to it, thats about it. i just put her toys in the crate and she followed and i gently shut the door behind her. she was going too crazy biting everything in site! she wouldn't stop lol. i feel really bad for doing this.

I wouldn't put her in her crate as punishment, but I would try to entice her into her crate with treats and toys so she learns to see the crate as a special, safe place to rest. Make sure she gets plenty of exercise outside, and she'll probably sleep more inside, but I know puppies have TONS of energy!

Time outs...whether in a crate or another room should only be for short periods of time...say 10-15 minutes. Anything longer than that and the dog forgets what the time out was for.

Crate training is a great help for both you and your Chihuahua. My old girl LaVie loved her crate, it was her den.

Be sure not to let her think the crate is a negative place, keep it a positive place and teach her it is a resting place.

Kathy Diamond Davis, who posts in the Dog Training/Obedience forum has a GREAT article on crate training on her web site. Crate Training Puppies
