our first rescue-Shiloh

My family lost a treasured member of our family due to a sudden illness and by the time our Vet diagnosed his condition we lost our beloved Barkley.....I didnt think we would ever let another furry soul into our lives again.....but I guess you know what they say about never
We met Shiloh on what was supposed to be her last day on this earth and we were told by the shelter that she was really abused and with her behavioral problems she wouldnt make a good pet. We wouldn't listen and now 4 days into our new life together Shiloh is making huge improvements....Don't get me wrong I can see many challenges on the horizon, however our goal is to walk back in to the shelter with our Shiloh to prove what a lot of love and patience can do for a battered little girl. We think she is appx 18mos...She was so shy and slinked everywhere when we first got her home...she found her den and we are working on her housebreaking skills a little at a time She has a love of shoes and is already starting to play and respond to her name. We are excited about her future with our family! Since this is my first post I am not sure how to post a picture of our girl, but if someone can help me I will share Shiloh with you folks...thanks for listening JOHN

One suggestion. Don't take Shiloh back there to show her off. Don't put her through the worry--EVER--that you are taking her back there to leave her. When you have the victory with her that you're planning, send them pictures. They can put them up on a bulletin board and a lot more people will see your dog that way anyhow.

I've had two of my adopted dogs show me this. In one case, I took the dog back to visit the breeder, who had been kind to her but naturally could not keep her in the style to which she had become accustomed at my house--such as sleeping on the bed and being the apple of my eye. When we got back into the car to go home, that was one happy dog. It was clear to me what she had been thinking.

In another case a dog of mine had been with another family, and after about three months with me, I invited them to come and see him. He waited for my permission to do anything they asked. And when they got ready to leave, he was nervous until they drove away without him. At that point he gave me lots of kisses.

These dogs had not been mistreated, but their former residences were not homes in the sense that mine was to them. By contrast, I have adopted dogs from the animal shelter, and they never completely get over that experience. They will appreciate forever having a secure home. Dogs can smell what is happening in a kill shelter, there is no doubt. It is unbelievably stressful for them.

Kathy was 100% right. Please do not take her back. She needs lots of time to trust everybody and love from them too which I am sure she is getting. Give her some time, I have a 4 yrs old GSD, we rescued her from a abusive place when she was 15 months old. She is a big challange, she has changed a lot. She is very lovely dog. Just let her know that you are there for herall the time.
What a cutie. If you want to see Cleo's photo:
