Time, patience, consistency, and some caffeine (to keep you awake after listening to him whine in thecrate all night), those are the best tools to help you train your new puppy.
There are some great books like "Don't Shoot the Dog" or "Puppy Training for Dummies" that are good. If you follow the advice, your puppy days will go smoother, but ultimately, every puppy is different and you have to find what works in your situation. In person help in a puppy class is also a wonderful way to socialize your puppy and talk with other puppy owners and people who are going through the same issues you are working through.
