Canine Disc Disease

Bladestorm Jan 31, 2006 10:02 PM

During the last couple of days my 9 year old American Eskimo has been yelping in pain almost every time he gets up from laying down. I wanted to bring him in to a Chiropractic Veterinarian but I am having trouble finding one in my area. The best I could do was find a Vet that claimed to be Holistic. After getting X-rays done it turns out my dog has Disc Disease. A few of the discs in the middle of his back are apparently too close together and its causing inflammation. The only remedy I was told is to get him on a good quality food, which he already is on, and to take Prednisone for a couple weeks. I took the Prednisone, but I do not want to give it to him. What can I do in a hurry to relieve the inflammation? After thats taken care of, what should I be doing for him in the long term?

Thank You

It's time for a specialist. Check the nearest veterinary university of your veterinarian can't recommend one in private practice. No chiropractic on a dog with active inflammation. That could harm the dog more.

I take it that you look for a chiro at the site below?

I have to disagree with Kathy on the no chiro care if there is inflammation, but I completely understand why she said it. I think anytime a disk is out, there is going to be some level of inflammation.

I have a dog that has a chronic inflammatory disorder along her spine and the only thing that keeps her going really is chiropractic care. Her chiro is avca certified, but is also a chiro for humans (not a vet) -- heh, she treats us both

I wonder if that holistic vet knows any certified acupuncturists or massage therapist -- both of those have potential to help if they are done by qualified people.

For the inflammation, I would look into products like Wobenzym and also Cetyl Myristoleate:

I had very good experience with the above product for both of my dogs.
