Couple imitator pics:

kyle1745 Oct 09, 2003 07:49 PM

First one is with a plus 2 close-up, and the second with a plus 4. Let me know what you think. The plus 4 really cuts the depth of field so its very hard to get more than a small section of the frog in focus.

Wonderful pictures! Your imitators have alot of green and mine are more blue. What bloodline are yours from?

I am unsure of the bloodline, I got them from Quality Captives and they were selling them for a friend. If I remember right they are from unrelated parents.

Very nice frogs, not to mention excellent pics. I am curious as to what type of camera your using also. I just bought me a new Sony F717. Maybe after I learn to use it better I can get a few pics like those of my imitators.

Very nice choice, mine is the older version of yours, a Sony f707. I did not upgrade due to only a few differences, but there a couple that I could really use, histogram, better LCD output in dark situations, etc... Quality wise they are the same, basically just some new features on yours. Some argue the f707 has better colors than the f717, because they really backed them off in the newer one. The new 828 will offer 3 color levers so users can pick how much color they want.

Here are some ideas for using your f717 on frogs:
1. Careful how far you zoom in, if you notice it will not be able to focus beyond a certain point. (Focal length)
2. Use the internal flash on low, and you can experiment with filtering it a bit. Some people use paper or toilet paper, which will reduce glare. Also taking from a angle helps.
3. The close-up set I use is only $55 (hoya 58mm close-up set), and works great, but can be very hard to use due to hoe much it cuts the depth of field.
4. Post processing is a as much a part of it as taking the picture. Pick up either Photoshop or Photoshop elements. Photoshop can run $400-600, but elements can be picked up for $50 or so i think. If you have a friend in college or know a teacher they can get a HUGE discount on both. There is a new version of Photoshop due out late November so prices on the old versions may drop more then.
5. Do not do any sharpening in the camera. Set it to 0. Photoshop is much better at it than the camera.

Sorry for the long post, but hope that helps.

Thanks for all the great tips. I will keep them in mind when shooting. I have a friend in here who said he has some software that I could use. Maybe I will try it and see what it is like. Thanks again for the tips

How far were you from the frogs? Very nice detail! I'm still new to the camera and havent got the hang of getting ultra close macros.

They are in a 15gal high tank, and in that picture the frog was on the back, so about 10 inches or so.
