For a new GSD Puppy...

Hilikme Feb 05, 2006 11:43 PM

Hi, I'll be getting a GSD puppy in the near future, and was hoping to get a clearer idea on some things...

I know a puppy should be fed three times a day, but I'm not sure what the portions should be for a GSD puppy, particularily 9 - 10 weeks old.

Also, is it common for a young GSD puppy (9-10 weeks) to make it through the night without a pee break? I have read conflicting articles on the subject and now I'm curious about people's experiences with this, or if i'ts just unpredictable and different for every puppy?

Thanks

Congrats on the upcoming puppy. I normally feed my young puppies 3x a day, at that age I am usually feeding 1/2 - 3/4 c at each feeding. If they didn't eat it all, I cut back a little.
However, most I've had have been hogs! I never feed more at that age IF they are hogs, because they tend to just eat till they pop, they are also not retaining much food at that age and usually poop out most of what they've eaten. I also do not feed puppy food but go right to a good quality adult food.

As for making it thru the nite, well don't count on it, but some CAN make it thru the nite. I try to put them on a good schedule, dinner usually being around 4pm, and last potty break around 10 pm. Morning breaks by 6am, unless of course they wake me in the nite. Again, it's not impossible, just depends on the puppy, but honestly don't count on not having to go out in the middle of the nite..Those 2 am potty breaks were killers in the cold weather!!

congrats on your soon to be new friend. my little guy is just a touch over 8 weeks. i usually get him out approx. every 3 hours, as im off of work right now rehabing an ankle injury, but he is caged at night around 10:30p.m. and has made it through every night(except the first night) until 6:30/7a.m.

i guess hes just like me with a big bladder...lol... as far as the feeding, my bullet gets 3 times a day, 3/4 of a cup for breakfast and lunch each time and a full cup for dinner. and he's also like me in that respect, like being back in basic training, eat it now, taste it later cause he "chows down" quick, all 3 meals, wagging that little tail the whole time.

good luck with your feeding, scheduling and housebreaking... its rough going, but with patience, time and care of your new best friend, it will pay off and work out.
