2yr old siberian husky

Vudew Feb 11, 2006 11:03 PM

Hi, i resently ( today ) adopted a 2yr old siberian husky from the humane society, he is very well behaved, very good with people, does not bite or anything, the only problem i find is that first he hasnt eaten anything since i brought him home, and he doesnt actually respond to the name they gave us, and seems unlike most dogs he is a very heavy sleeper, i mean i can touch and play with his paws while hes sleeping and he doesnt move, we did do alot of running today, could he just be tired out? Thanks for your help and if i am in the wrong forum i do appologize.

I with him on this one, my husky is only 5 months old now and she use to be really active like wouldn't let me sleep active. But now that we run a lot more she'll go to sleep at 10 at night and won't wake up until around 8. Its good for me but I just want to make sure nothing is wrong with her.

Joe... Congrats on your new Sibe and you are in the right forum. I don't have a Sibe I have Shiba Inus so we are related in a way. Your Sibe not eating right away isn't much of a concern as I would be pretty sure he is confused and has to get used to his new surroundings. Are you using the same food the shelter had used? He could be tired from the running, you didn't say how far you ran but just in case I would take him to your vet for a thorough checkup if you haven't done so already just to make sure he is medically and physically sound. They are pretty active dogs though and need that kind of activity. Looking at your other post Mac is a great looking dog. In time he will get used to his name but Sibes, like my Shibas could be pretty independent.

yeah it is the same food, science diet, tho i have been told it isnt the best for them, he finally went to the bathroom today, tho it was more rank then most dog doo i have been around, and as expected he had the runs, we are going to take him to petsmart today and get him some toys and such, another question that i am concerned about is it seems everyone and their brother wants to tell me how i should train him and they try to command him around, and it is getting quite annoying because i feel I should be the one he learns to obey first, and not the neighbors, any suggestions on how to curb this without being rude or am i just over reacting? thanks in advance.

Hey there. I have 3 huskies and I know what you are going through. Two came from the Humane Society and one I found on the side of the road. Your new "puppy" will eventually learn it's name. I've learned that it's best to use names that are more than 2 syllables. Like, "Lexi, Nicademus, and Wundter." Those are my "kids" names. She is probably sleeping a lot to get used to everything. She probably is loving the quiet. My kids sleep most of the day but when they play - they play hard!! She is probably just trying to get used to a routine. And ignore people - tell them it's your dog and you'll handle the training. I've had to do that with many of friends. I get told that I'm not doing things right because mine are allowed on the furniture and sleep with me. Oh well.....different strokes for different folks!! Hang in there....it'll get easier!
