crib for new puppy

Hi I am new to this forum and to yorkies. I always wanted one but hubby thought a poodle would be smaller and better for me to manage due to health problems with my arms. Love all dogs but want one I can take places with me.
So...hubby fell in love with a yorkie he saw so I am getting a yorkie to spoil. Lucky me!!

Now my q: Hubby was talking about building a playpen for nighttime and when needs to be confined. Would it be better to buy a 2nd hand baby playpen instead?
What size would be best if builing one? hubby is handy at making things and we have time. Any suggestions?

A portable exercise pen for dogs is a very good investment. If you want to make something, it would be a good idea to look at these carefully first. But truly, it is such a bad problem to have a sharp spot here and there that the dog could get cut on, I wouldn't even consider trying to make this. I'd buy a good one. You'll likely have it for years.

In my opinion you would better server your pup if you go to the local pet store like PetSmart and buy a nice CRATE. Reasons:

1) its portable, you can move it from one place to another and, in emergency you can get your dog out of the house quickly and safely.

2) the dog will be in comfortable surroundings for transportation. Dogs should not be allowed, even SMALL dogs, to be free in a vehicle. In my state, Washington, the State Partol will not pull a dog out of a car that's been involved in an accident, even if the car is burning, unless the dog is crated. Also, if you are in an accident and the dog is crated there ZERO chance the dog will escape from the car and get hit on the road.

Just two important reasons.

A Crate is your best option. You can get a nice Vari Kennel 200 type crate for about 35.00 at PetSmart. And it Can LITERALLY save your dog's life some day.
