cold sore-like wounds

freshmeat Feb 17, 2006 06:09 PM

my female dobe has recurring bumps on the bottom of her chin. they heal, but they always come back and bleed slightly. the pinkish-whitish bumps are akin to cold sores, and looks as if pus comes out from them. has your dog experienced similar conditions? if so, what's the best remedy?

It's pretty common. So common that someone coined a term for them - chinples (chin pimples).

One common cause is plastic feeding dishes. If you're feeding from a plastic container, switch to stainless steel.

Another common cause is simply ingrown hairs. Often, when you squeeze the pimples, hair will shoot out.

Some people wipe their dogs' chins with listerine or another astringent to clean the area or they wash it with antibacterial soap or something like Hibitane.

I'm sorry you are goign through this. Hopefully it's no big deal, but never a bad idea to have a vet look at it.

Dear dog,
I can not buy anything larger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think that I will continue to sleep on the couch to ensure your comfort. Look at videos of dogs sleeping, they can actually curl up in a ball. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to your fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straigt out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space used is nothing more than doggy sarcasm.
