GSD - eats her bed?

eviltigger26 Feb 17, 2006 10:56 PM

I have a GSD who is 4 1/2 and always had a sensitive stomach. She only gets dog food, in small amounts, twice a day. She gets the random dog treat, but no people food! She has been putting on some weight this winter, which we thought might be her winter weight. She is very hyper. She will pace in her room at night (not all the time) and whine. I let her outside and she goes right for the blades of grass to make herself sick. Other times she gets this licking craze and cannot stop. She will lick at nothing, then the floor, then her bed or the carpet and unfortunately starts to eat them. I can't give her a bed because she has ingested too many of them (I've seen them pass and unfortunately had to help the last one along...) I have read up on bloat and she doesn't have a hard stomach or huge tummy. She is on the heavier side than she should be (maybe 7 pounds overweight). She isn't lethargic (if anything she is hyperactive). She does pant - constantly! Anyone have any ideas or help or comments?

PS - Her name is Bear

There could be something medically wrong with your Bear. Have you taken her to your vet recently for a thorough checkup? It could be she is missing something in her diet. You say you feed in small amounts but is it enough to sustain her needs? Is the food of good quality and nutritionally sound? The panting and excessive licking could be an onset of Cushings... does she show signs of excessive thirst?
Please post back with any additional information.

This could also be a sign of frustration. Do you walk her daily? Does she have some sort of job to do? GSD's need something to keep them busy. Exercise in a backyard does not replace walking. Properly walking your dog, not just putting on a leash and letting your dog walk you, seems to be a great cure for a great number of annoying habits they develope out of boredom.
Just my 2 dog biscuits worth.
