Ground Chicken Bones

carmeny Feb 21, 2006 10:25 PM

We own a restaurant. Every few days we grind up meat left-overs and meat ends (from deli meats)and feed them to our dogs. We call it their "McDonalds" and they only get about a cup each once per week. My question is: A couple of days ago we slightly overcooked some chicken wings and my husband put them through our meat-grinder. This is not a small meat grinder as it is a commercial meat grinder. Anyway, I felt the chicken and bone meal as it came out. The bones that are left are about 2mm. I am wondering if there is still danger with feeding dogs ground up chicken bones that were cooked. All I can find on the internet is it is okay to feed them ground up raw chicken bones.

Does anyway know anything about this or where I can look on the internet. These little guys are my babies and I certainly don't want to harm them in any way. I do make my own dog food consisting of beef, lamb, oats, rice and veggies but I have never fed them ground up chicken bones. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Basically feeding cooked bones, whether chicken or beef could cause them to splinter when chewed which is why raw is best. I don't think bone fragments that small would cause a problem...2mm would be small enough to swallow and pass easily I would think.

thank you! there really isn't that much there so I think I will give it to the large dogs (2) and not my smaller dogs (3)!

After watching my big dog barf up his ball that he had chewed and eaten, I hope that these tiny fragments will not hurt him!!!

I'd be a bit reluctant to feed cooked bones only because the shape of the bones and the jagged edges that they have. Call me paranoid. I'm just not sure I would do it, but yet, 2mm is a very small piece. If your dogs are large, maybe it's no big deal.

Although quite honestly, I probably would not feed my dogs overcooked fried foods- except in very small quantities. The coating on the wings would give my dogs a horrible stomach ache.

I am still up in the air but probably will not feed it to them as I am paranoid as well.

As far as the chicken wings themselves, we bake them in our stone oven with no coating or spice on them (not even salt or pepper) so they were not deep-fried at all - just baked like roasting a chicken itself. I would never feed them anything spicy or deepfried.

Glad to hear. For some reason I had this vision of dogs eating these spicy rich buffalo wings and could not imagine the mess I'd have to clean up in the morning not to mention the odiferous after effects. Nasty. LOL!

I think it's great that your dogs can have some variety in their diets. What a great way to recycle.

Thanks! Ya, I couldn't imagine - Buffalo Wings - they let off some pretty smells somedays as it is - could you imagine!!! I try to give them some variety as I can't imagine even milkbones tasting good - but they love them. The Beggin Strips I can see but the other stuff seems so bland!
