Success of AI

Lakesong Feb 23, 2006 04:09 PM

Hi all... I'm new here and hope that some of you have had more experience with AI than I have.
My bitch was AI'd on Monday, she was standing, flagging, progesterone was right where it should be. We were only able to do one AI due to time and distance contstraints during a dog show quite far from home. We think it was at the perfect time, and the stud 2 weeks before had an excellent sperm count and motility etc, so I'm hoping it will take. However, even though the vet clinic was one the owner of the stud had every confidence in and has worked with for many years, the vet in particular that we had to use was new. Not a new vet, but new to that clinic. I personally do not feel he did this right.
He began collecting the dog, and then stopped and said he was taking a break, just after a very miniscule amount of fluid was seen in the collection bag. He then finished the job, and there was 12 cc's but it did not look very cloudy to me so I asked him to check the count. By this time my bitch was already AI'd and we were holding her back end up. The vet checked, and the count was lower than expected. Not nil, not really low, but considerably lower than it had been 2 weeks before.
The reason this concerns me, is the vet THREW OUT the first collection bag with the tiny amount of fluid, he said it was only pre ejaculate and not to worry. I think that was the semen-rich fraction, and that he inseminated my bitch with mostly prostate fluid and that is why the count was lower. The sperm in the clearer fluid still had excellent motility etc, so what do you think my chances are for getting anytihng out of this AI?

I don't have a huge amount of experience with this, but it does sound like there was a small error made. I'm surprised your vet would throw out anything before the procedure was complete and motility should have been checked on the sample he was using before the AI.

As for your chances of success, I just can't comment on that. I wish you the best of luck with it.

Hi. I have a little experience with AI. I cannot say if this vet didn't anything wrong. I can say I would be feeling the way you do, concerned. Why did this guy stop collecting???? The semen comes in the second phase. If he already got through the first phase, why stop? I don't get it. I wouldn't stop collecting! I have experience with collecting and once you get them to the point of ejeculating, don't just stop, collect ALL of it. I hope your dog is pregnant.
