Accidnetal Breeding - HELP!

ChrisX80z Feb 24, 2006 01:36 PM

I've bred three litters of hunting Beagles since 1994. NEVER had an accidental breeding before ... until today.
Background is this is a 3 yr old bitch who just had her first litter in October. I thought this was a good cross and was planning to mate this pair again, but in 2-3 YEARS! I have not kept perfect track of her cycle but I believe this is the 14-18th day in ... ugh ... Anyway, I had the bitch kenneled in a wire crate while getting ready to feed the pack. I had my eye on the stud dog as I'm scooping out the food, and by the time I filled his bowl he was gone. I check inside and somehow, one of them unhitched the latch of the crate and the two of them were in the middle of the living room, already tied.
I tried loosening the connection with an ice pack, but nothing. Kept the pack on for several min then used another larger, colder pack which finally broke the tie.
I immediately crated the male in a plastic crate and took the female out to urinate.
Does anyone think this could be a viable breeding? I did break the tie unnaturally w/ the ice pack but they were tied for at least 5 min. What would you do in my situation?

if you really dont want to follow through on this mating you could take the female to the vet and have them abort the pregnancy, I dont know how long you have to wait till they can do that though.
