Husky rant/worms

anne_elizabeth Mar 05, 2006 12:46 AM

Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh---Smokey has roundworms!!!! The vet gave me some med, but ughhhhhhhhhhhhh, how can I keep a Husky dirt digger/eater from ingesting more eggs??? Even if I scrupulously pick up after him in the yard?? Ugghhhh, this is just sooooooooo grosss.

Grosser yet is the thought that me or my fam might get the worms. Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Vet said it was rare, but.....I worry.
The breeder said she had wormed him....twice.....ughhhhhhhh.

Have any of ya'll had recurring probs with Huskies and worms? It seems to me that all the dirt they get into would be full of yucky stuff. At least my little guy is always into dirt...etc.

For the record Smokey is a healthy 4 month old pup. (Minus the worms) A month ago he was 27 pounds, now he's 37. Everyone in the vet office just adored him, and said they wanted to get a Husky. I thought to myself, if only you knew..............

Of course I would not part with Smokey, but oh MANNNNNNNN, are Huskies a handful!!!!!!! But I can handle him...I think...

I agree that the worms are not very pleasant to deal with. But we do what we must. I have been doing some simple training with my chaos and she is doing ok so far. The jumping on poeple will be addressed very soon. Good luck, Jeff

Living in a semi tropical climate I know where you're coming from, but you need to keep your dogs on monthly heartworm preventative all year, no matter where you live, and the one my vet gives me prevents other parasites as well. It's called Iverhart Plus. Also, consider getting a health insurance program on your dogs. It's super cheap and mine covers parasites, free spay and neuter, free office visits, free vaccines, and a bunch of other goodies. It's only like 20 a month for my youngest, who's getting ready to transfer to an adult program and my oldest is on the premium program only because it covers xrays and such and he was hit by a car before we got him.

We've had our boys over a year now and in that year we've SAVED like $8000... not hundred but thousand. One was abused and the other came from a Puppy Mill... which I made my mission to get shut down. Having this plan leaves us with no hesitation as to taking them in and they actually get better medical treatment than we do. Hubby and I will go weeks with the flu or an injury and our dogs even seem off and they are into the vets. I recomment Banfield Pet Hospitals, usually located in PetsMarts. They vets there are amazing and my boys actually enjoy going.

Keep in mind though, year round flea and tick as well as heartworm prevention is the best way to avoid these problems. Pet insurance makes it cheaper to deal with. When the time comes for spay and neuter you get that free too. It makes pet ownership so much easier.

I don't have huskies, but I have a problem with one of my greyhounds eating bunny droppings. She kept getting tapeworm until I put her on heartworm meds that help with other worms. I hate any type of worms in my dogs. YUK!

Dogs come into our lives, and too quickly go leaving pawprints on our hearts, and we will never be quite the same again.

My 3 month old Husky just got roundworms also. She vomited a huge adult worm, so I took her into the vet. He said that roundworms are in the womb of the mother, and 98% of puppies have worms, but they usually die off, but sometimes they don't. He just gave Dakota a wormer, and they have been showing up in her poop for the past few days, which is good.
Don't worry about the worms.. the wormer will more than likely work. But, I agree, it is really gross!

My puppy was eleven pounds when I got her, and now she weighs 27! She's growing SO fast. And every time I take her to the vet, everyone absolutely adores her. And she's perfect around other people, then as soon as we get home the demon side takes over. haha.
