Male huskies/neutering

anne_elizabeth Mar 05, 2006 12:55 AM

For those of you with experience with male huskies--do they generally become quite intent on escaping their yard looking for a female, if they are **not** neutered? I was wondering if their gentle, mellow temperament would lessen this tendencey.

I do NOT want my little darling baby boy to go under the knife, maybe it's my Catholic religion tho I know this procedure is not immoral for doggies, but............I just want to keep him ***natural*** if you know what I mean. And who knows, he might be desirable as a stud someday. But I'm afraid of what could happen when he gets a little older...and jumps a fence--we have a standard chain link--I would hate to lose him....

I never leave him alone in the yard when I'm not home, so that wouldn't be a factor in any possible non-neutering wanderlust...

I would appreciate any insights into male Husky behavior, pertaining to the neuter/non neuter issue.

Thanks,
A.E.

I dont personally keep a husky myself but I've known people and my family has kept them in the past, and everything I've heard says that even when altered they love to roam, I believe any male dog will persue a female in season wether that dog be altered or not, just depends on the dog as to how far and how determined he is to get to her.

Husky's are escape artists by nature- that's even when spayed and neutered. The husky in our neighborhood is in my yard at minimum once a week and the owner claims to not have a clue how this dog is getting out. The 'roaming tendency' of an unneutered dog looking for a female in heat would compound this problem exponentially.

We didn't neuter our Husky until he was almost 5 and it was amazing what a difference it made. We also at the time had a chainlink fence. He easily could scale it. Once he was "fixed" he didn't seem to have as much interest in getting out. But watch out for anything that crawls on the other side of the fence - stray cat, squirrel, etc. They will chase anything!!
