Mystery Mutt -- with pictures!

jhutchin Mar 05, 2006 09:55 PM

The pictures didn't go up on the last message, so here they are now, I hope! We are really wondering what kind of dog we have, especially since we're always getting comments and questions about her. Many have tried to figure out what she is and have given up. So if anyone can give us an idea, it would be greatly appreciated.

Although your dog hasn't got prick ears but does have a spitz tail, I wonder if she is part American Eskimo? Hard to guess the other mix.

she almost looks like the pics I've seen of cocker/american eskies, it's a tough call though.

She is beautiful!!! I don't really see any spitz in her, I cant see the tail that everyone is talking about, maybe I'm going crazy but i don't see it. when I first saw the pics I would have to say she has golden retreiver in her. But I've read your other post and her weight is no where near a Golden. I dont see any terrier like you vet told you she was. Baised on her weight and the spitz that you see an Eskie could be in her mix. It would help if you measured her height, at the withers, and described her personality. Alot of breeds have their own special personality traits that separate them from other breeds.

Thanks to everyone so far for your replies. It look like there's a consensus about there being American Eskimo in our dog. In response to animalcarker, Athena does have a spitz tail, which she can uncurl at times, but it doesn't show up in the pictures. I'll be glad to give her height, but I'm not sure what the withers are -- is that at the top of her hip? As for her temperament, she's very protective of and attached to us, and our son in particular. She hates to be separated from us, especially from him. She learns quickly, but does have a stubborn streak. She's very affectionate. Her energy level is really high, and she's very agile (she leaps like a deer). I'll be glad to answer any more questions...and thanks again for the ideas!

Your dog reminds me a lot of our dog Moxie, but without the brown coloring. We believe Moxie is a Corgi/Spaniel mix. Your dog might have some kind of spaniel in her. She's lovely!

We are pretty sure Moxie is part Corgi because she has a lot of herding dog traits, the large erect ears, and a long body! The pictures don't show it, but she has curly hair and a curled tail like your dog.

Look up silken windhounds. What you're describing sounds like a sighthound (especially the part about being stubborn!), and the size, body, and coat make me think of silkens. Is she pure white? If so you ought to contact someone from the International Silken Windhound Society. There haven't ever been any pure white silkens, and if that's what you have you could really freak some people out!
