$1000 Sibes

wpglaeser Mar 13, 2006 10:39 PM

No kidding...

I was at a mall in So-Cal and saw 2 adorable blk/wht Sibe pups in the window. I watched them for a while and then asked the guy "How much?" He said with a straight face ... $999.

Who would pay $1000 for a dog? These dogs were from North Dakota. This pet store had dogs from all over the country. Why bring 2 Sibes from ND to Orange County? I hope they flew First Class!

Some neighbours of my parents, some years ago paid $4,000 for there dog. The dog didn't live to be 10 years old and was fairly brainless... although it could have just been taking after it's owners.

They wanted this breed(can't remember for the life of me what it was) so much that they paid to have it specially shipped from the breeder etc.

At any rate... so long as people keep paying outrageous prices, others will keep charging outrageous prices.

I cant even find anyone to take in the husky I found...all they have to do is sign a contract! My area is tons of huskys that dont have homes, all the rescues around me are full...I had one guy interested in Lyric turn around and buy one for 800.00 becouse he wanted mismatched eyes. He wasnt going to breed and didnt care about papers and she looked almost identical except for eyes.
Breeders spend alot more for there dogs trying to get top quality...I have a freind whos shiba cost them 28,000.00. It was imported from a special place in Japan...one of there best dogs. I have heard a rumor about another kennel having a dog that cost close to 40,000.00. I dont know if I believe that or not...28,000.00 pushed it alittle to far for me in the first place.
That wippet that was lost after the show in Florida was suppose to be worth over 100,000.00. I dont remember how much it was actually said to be worth, but definatly over 100,000.00. I 125,000.00 actually. Jen

Those were puppy mill dogs. Isn't it incredible that pet shops sell badly bred, unsafely handled, housetraining handicapped, and otherwise messed-up puppies for more than a responsible breeder does? And that people pay it, because it's easier than finding a responsible breeder?

Yeah, I agree. I figured that out when I saw some there from my home state of Missouri. Unfortunately, my state is has the ubiquitous distinction of being #1 in the puppy mill biz.

However, just cause a dog is from a puppy mill doesn't mean it's a freak or some kind of mutant. These Sibes looked well bred, healthy, and acted normally. I'd take one ... just not for $1000.

I have a friend who spent $1,200 for a mixed breed dog (um, "designer dog"--we used to call them mutts).

Believe it or not, we've had people at the dog park offer us 1,000 in cash to buy our dog.

I live in Taiwan and I paid $300US for my little puppy. A few months after I bought her a husky made the news here for pulling a newborn baby out of a toilet and nursing it until the medics arrived. A few months after that was Chinese New Year (year of the dog) so the price of huskys went up to around $1,300US. I doubt that had anything to do with the price in Cali though...
