Question On UV

OneTwoManyHerps Oct 09, 2003 08:43 PM

Hi everyone, I have female mali uro and was wondering if I should stick with florescent UV or Merc Vapor? Does it really make a differance in a cage thats only 1 1/2' tall. I would just like to stick with a Zoo Med 6.0 bulb but if thats not good enough then...I don't know, I would just like your opinion and what you use! THANKS

Its really just a matter of preference. Whichever works best for your setup. Personally I prefer MVBs. They are more expensive but can last 4 times as long as the tubes. For eg...MVBs are about $50 (Ive seen them for more and less) tubes $20ish. MVBs can last 2 years and tubes are good for only 6 months. MVBs also provide heat so many times other spot lights aren't needed. Tubes provide no heat so other lights are needed.

It's all a personal preference. If you would like, I am currently testing a Reptisun 5.0 fluorescent, a 160 watt Powersun, a Capture the Sun, and a T-Rex Active UV Heat bulb. The results are posted on my website below. You can see from the results which bulbs product what amount at what distance. So if you have a Reptisun that is more than 12 inches away, you can see by the figures that you aren't getting very much UVB to the reptile. The 160 watt Powersun produces a lot more UVB at that distance.

Hope this helps.
