Not as eager for food (teething?)

maggiesmom Mar 25, 2006 12:54 AM

We have a 5 month old lemon beagle. She used to be so excited for her food but now it seems she could take it or leave it. She would still love to have our food if we gave it to her though.

She is still teething so could this be it? Is it very painful for them and if so what can I do to help her? I wet and heat her food to make it soft and she does eventually eat it. I never would leave her food for very long before but I have to leave it out indefinitely until she gets to it.

I am hoping it is teething and nothing more serious. We haven't changed her food, it was what she was brought up on and always loved it.

When does teething usually end?

Perhaps some dogs get picky due to teething, but I've never seen that happen. Sounds more likely that you are teaching her to be picky by tempting her, making it "better," and leaving it out too long.

Take her to the vet and have her checked for medical problems. If she's okay, start offering food twice a day for no longer than 20 minutes, and then take it up and give nothing until time for the next meal. And give this dog no in-between meal or people foods. She needs to learn to eat the food you put down for her when you put it down, for her own welfare.

Hi! I am new to this site I have an 8 month old beagle who is being stubborn about eating I now put some can food on her food and she loves it she will not eat it unless it has this on it. I have put her on a few different foods she has severe allergies. We almost lost her at 8 weeks old from cocidia I only had her three days when I found she was ill. She is a happy vibrant puppy now we just have to watch what she eats so she don't get sick. You could give the canned food a try. Good luck
