Help identify my family dog!

pdi805 Mar 27, 2006 03:37 PM

Hello,

I am in the process of researching breeds, and it has made me curious about the breed of my old family dog. I don't have much of an eye for identifying breeds or mixes, so it may be more obvious than I think. But I have looked through some breed books with sample photographs, and I can't seem to find a match. 3 pictures of Ralph are attached.

Ralph is now 15-16 years old, though the pictures were taken over the last 10 years. If there is any other information about Ralph that will help identify him (behavior, characteristics, etc.), I can try to provide it, but he currently lives across the country in my hometown. We got him from another family when he was 1 year old, and we have no information about his parents.

Thanks!

pdi

Just for a little additional information can you provide how large or small Ralph is, how tall and also his average weight? It's hard to tell but from the ears I'm thinking perhaps some sort of Corgi or Shepard mix. Maybe with the additional details we may be able to narrow it down. Thanks!

Thanks for the response!

These stats are only estimates, because I've never measured Ralph's height or weight. I may ask my sister to measure him when she has a chance, but for now I'll give you my best guesses from memory.

He is about 16" tall, and I'd say his average weight is 20-23 lbs. or so. He has lost weight as he has gotten older. He is about the size of a basenji, if that helps.

Hopefully this will help.

Thanks!

looks kinda like a lab/corgie to me, maybe even some dachshund: looking at his feet, thats my best guess.

Thanks for the additional information. If I were to only look at the top picture I would have said possibly a Shiba mix of some kind but in the subsequent pictures I'm still leaning towards a Corgi mix. Whatever Ralph may be he is a great looking dog!

Thanks for the input! Now that you mention some of those breeds, I can see some resemblance. If anyone has any further thoughts on Ralph's background, I'd appreciate it.

Now when people ask what kind of breed Ralph is, I can say something other than "I don't know, he's a smallish yellow dog". Thanks!

His size and general appearance I would go with a corgi mix.
