He never wants to come inside

barnicle Mar 28, 2006 07:58 PM

My two year old lab never wants to come inside when I take him out to go to the bathroom. I know labs love being outside, mine especially. During the day he doesn't get to go outside because Im usually at work all day and so are my parents. I know that's the problem. he does get to go outside a lot and run around, we have a big yard. But sometimes he plays to much, usually when I dont' have time to play with him. When I call for him to come inside he runs away from me, like I'm joking with him. he thinks everything is a game, and he runs away from me like we are playing tag and im it. It really ticks me off. I know he does it on purpose. He knows what he is doing, and sometimes I will tell him he can have a treat and that sometimes works. It just really ticks me off and frustrates me. I know why he does it I just need help with getting him back inside without having to punish him for making me so mad, and disobeying me. Is there anything I can do to help him come inside? What are some obedience tricks?

It's important that you take your dog to training class. Chasing him will only encourage him to run from you, and getting mad will mess things up, too. You can find a lot of training information, including come-when-called, at the link below my signature. Be sure to read the article "Training: What Does Your Dog Need?"

Sound like some basic training is needed. Try a lead in the house and work on the here command. Then switch to a longer lead. Then you can use maybe a 20-30 foot lead outdoors. Just say your dogs name and the command here. If he doesn't come pull the lead. Pretty easy, just be consistant with your command word and your treat or corrections. Scott

He's not a bad dog. He is a very good dog, very gentle and sweet and usually obedient. Its just recently he has been so defiant, he is 2 years and 3 months old. He is def not a puppy anymore and he is past puberty. We have these neighbors next door to us with two labs and as soon as barney found out about them, that is when trouble started. Whenever the dogs next door hear barney outside, or me calling for him, they come over. Then I can't get Barney inside. The dogs distract them and he wants to stay outside and play forever with them. they won't go over to where they belong either, and their owners are NOT home when this happens. I think I am going to pay them a visit and personally ask them to keep their dogs up when they are not home, its the law. If they don't do that, then I will just have to call on them, so they will HAVE to keep their dogs up when they are not home.

I am not saying that you have a bad dog, but I do think you should work with the long lead. You will want your dog to come to you no matter what else is going on around him. Just think if for some reason he got out and was heading for the road after a rabbit, another dog, or something and a car was coming. If he gets away with not coming to you now it could mean death. Just my two cents worth. Good luck Scott
